Benalla residents are invited to participate in community consultation, providing input on the preferred location for the redevelopment of the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre (BIRC). With a substantial $15 million grant from the State Government, Benalla Rural City Council has committed to the construction of a facility aligned with the community's needs, fostering active and healthy lifestyles.

Mayor Cr Danny Claridge, speaking on behalf of the Council, emphasised the significance of this consultation. "This marks a critical step in the redevelopment of the BIRC as we ask our community to actively participate in shaping the future location of the stadium. We want to hear your preferences and ensure the facility meets your expectations," Mayor Cr Claridge stated.

At the Council meeting held on 13 December, the Council endorsed the adoption of the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre Redevelopment Project Community Engagement Plan and the commencement of at least 28-days of public exhibition starting Wednesday 20 December with the launch of an online survey. Continuing throughout January, engagement activities will also include face-to-face meetings with the community and project stakeholders.

Residents are encouraged to provide insights into their preferred site among the three options currently under consideration: the current BIRC location on Ackerly Avenue, the former Benalla P-12 College Barkly Street Campus at 41-55 Barkly Street, and Churchill Recreation Reserve.

Mayor Cr Claridge disclosed that the architect's conducted an initial feasibility study of the three sites with the preferred site being Churchill Recreation Reserve, however, said the community's thoughts would be considered before the Council decide on the final location.

To facilitate community involvement, an online survey has been launched, enabling residents to contribute their preferences and suggestions. Large signage at all three potential sites, along with project information available at key locations, such as Council Offices, BIRC, and Benalla Library, aims to keep the community well-informed.

After the community consultation results are presented to the Council, the next steps involve concept design, detailed design, and final approval from the Council.

Mayor Cr Danny Claridge emphasised the community's role in shaping the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre Redevelopment project. "This is an opportunity for the Council to work collaboratively with the community, ensuring their concerns and aspirations are directly reflected in this modern, purpose-built facility," Mayor Cr Claridge emphasised.
