Council will hold an Unscheduled Council Meeting on Tuesday 4 August 2026 to elect a new Mayor following the resignation of Cr Kate Kendall from the office of Mayor.
The meeting will be held at 12.30pm at the Gisborne Administration Centre, in accordance with Council's Governance Rules, which require a mayoral election to be conducted when a vacancy occurs in the office of Mayor.
Cr Kendall's resignation as Mayor became effective at the close of business on Friday 24 July 2026. Cr Kendall remains a councillor.
Chief Executive Officer Bernie O'Sullivan said the meeting had been called in accordance with Council's governance requirements.
"Council's Governance Rules outline the process for electing a Mayor when a vacancy occurs during a mayoral term," Mr O'Sullivan said.
"The councillor elected at the meeting will serve as Mayor for the remainder of the current term, which concludes on 18 November 2026."
In accordance with Section 21 of the Local Government Act 2020, Deputy Mayor Cr Cassy Borthwick is performing the role of Mayor from 5.00pm on Friday 24 July 2026 until the mayoral election is conducted on 4 August 2026.
The agenda for the meeting will be published on Council's website on Thursday 30 July 2026.
