Council is mobilising crews to mechanically open Tabourie Lake to help mitigate flooding ahead of forecast heavy rainfall.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for possible heavy rainfall and large seas. It is anticipated that the lake's water level will reach 1.3m AHD (the Planned Opening Level).
Subject to the safety of machinery operators, Council will open Tabourie Lake to the sea today, to help reduce the impact of flooding to low lying properties in accordance with the Tabourie Lake Entrance Management Policy and Crown Lands licence.
People are requested to stay outside the work area and keep away from the edges of the dug channel and eroding banks following opening, as these areas may be unstable and unsafe.
Council will continue to monitor all catchments across the Shoalhaven to assess whether any additional entrance management activities are required.
As the lead agency in the response to floods and storms, the community is reminded to seek news and updates from the NSW State Emergency Service (SES).
