From early cattle sales in the 1940s to its role in today's modern beef supply chain, the Dalby Regional Saleyards' 85‑year journey will be formally recognised this July with the unveiling of a new history wall at the iconic facility.
The history wall will be launched on Friday, 3 July 2026 by Western Downs Regional Council at the Dalby Regional Saleyards, as part of celebrations marking the 85‑year anniversary of the facility.
The event will coincide with the judging of the 2026 Ekka Prime Beef Competition, with both milestones recognised at the saleyards on the day.
Western Downs Regional Council Spokesperson for Business Strategy and Economic Development Cr Megan James said the history wall was a lasting tribute to the people and industry that built the saleyards over generations.
"The Dalby Regional Saleyards history wall captures more than dates and milestones - it tells the story of the producers, agents, workers and families who have contributed to the success of the yards since their establishment," Cr James said.
"From their beginnings as the Dalby Municipal Saleyards in 1941, the yards have grown alongside our region and have been a constant presence at the heart of Queensland's livestock industry."
The history wall documents the evolution of cattle selling in Dalby, drawing from archival records, historical documents and news articles to trace livestock trading in the district back as far as 1863.
"We've undertaken extensive research to ensure the stories reflected on the wall honour the history of cattle sales in Dalby and the role the saleyards continue to play today," Cr James said.
"It is a celebration of resilience, innovation and community - and a reminder of how deeply the cattle industry is woven into the identity of the Western Downs."
Today, the Dalby Regional Saleyards is recognised as one of the largest livestock selling centres in Australia, selling almost 300,000 cattle each year and supporting a nationally significant intensive agriculture sector.
"With almost half of Australia's feedlot capacity located within 200 kilometres of Dalby, and 84 registered feedlots across the Western Downs, the saleyards remain central to both our regional economy and the national beef supply chain," Cr James said.
The Dalby Regional Saleyards 85‑Year Anniversary celebration and history wall unveiling is a free community event.
"Anyone who has had an association with the saleyards - past or present - is warmly invited to attend, reconnect with familiar faces and be part of this important milestone," Cr James said.
