Dangerous riding at Maroochydore

Police have charged a 26-year-old Maroochydore man with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Police were conducting speed enforcement on the Sunshine Motorway, at Maroochydore yesterday (January 3) when they allegedly observed the motorcycle travelling at a high speed towards them.

Police allegedly recorded the motorbike's speed at 197km/h and 182km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Police intercepted the rider on the motorway and he was placed under arrest.

The Maroochydore man was charged and is scheduled to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates Court on January 29, 2024.

Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho, Officer in Charge of the Sunshine Coast Highway Patrol has asked motorcycle riders to remember that they are among some of Queensland's most vulnerable road users.

"Motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to be killed in a crash than people who are in a car," he said.

"This rider was travelling at almost 200km/hr, at that speed, a crash is almost guaranteed to be fatal."

"This was incredibly dangerous riding, not only for himself but for other road users," Senior Sergeant Panoho said.

"This man will now have to appear before a court and explain to a magistrate why he was putting himself and other road users at risk of serious injury or death."

"We're reminding motorcyclists and all road users that we are all responsible for making our roads safer."
