Darwin Marks NAIDOC Week 2025: Honoring Heritage

Darwin City Council

City of Darwin is proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2025, a time to recognise, reflect and pay tribute to the rich history, culture and achievements of First Nation and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

This year's theme, 'The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy', shines a light on the powerful role of the enduring strength and intergenerational knowledge of First Nations communities. It calls on all Australians to support future leaders and keep the fire of culture, connection and legacy burning bright.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said, "NAIDOC Week is a chance for all of us to walk together in solidarity, to listen and learn from First Nations voices, and to support the leaders of tomorrow. City of Darwin is committed to strengthening our partnerships with local First Nation organisations and ensuring First Nation culture is recognised and celebrated in our city."

"As part of our commitment to supporting First Nation communities, City of Darwin has developed a Community Grants Program to assist First Nation and Torres Strait Islander organisations, businesses, and community groups in delivering events and activities. Through this program, Council is proud to support a range of impactful initiatives taking place across the city this NAIDOC Week, including those led by Brother to Another, CAAPS, Tracks Care, Yilli Housing, the North Australian Aboriginal Family Legal Service, The Deadly Cup, and Xhale Events." added the Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis.

To launch this important and culturally significant week, the NAIDOC Flag Raising Ceremony took place this morning at Tamarind Park in Darwin City. The ceremony marked the official beginning of NAIDOC Week 2025, bringing community members together in a spirit of reflection, respect and celebration of First Nations culture, identity and resilience.

The NAIDOC March and Community Breakfast will take place on Friday 11 July 2025, from 7:00 am to 12:00 pm at Civic Park, Darwin City. The march will begin at 9:00 am.
