Darwin, Palmerston Ramp Up Security Measures

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is ramping up community safety measures across Darwin and Palmerston over Christmas, with the extension and expansion of private security patrols.

Under the upgraded safety blitz, private security numbers will double, and patrol hours will be extended from 8:00am to 12:00am (midnight) Monday to Saturday, with Sunday patrols running until 8:00pm. These changes take effect from today.

This increase in staffing and patrol hours will boost tip-out capacity, deter crime, and allow earlier intervention.

Territorians can expect to see a higher presence in Darwin, the Northern Suburbs, and Palmerston.

Chief Minister and Police Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the CLP Government is taking action to bolster community safety ahead of what is traditionally an increased period of antisocial behaviour.

"Territorians deserve to be safe and supported, no matter the time of day. By doubling security personnel and extending patrol coverage to midnight, we are delivering a stronger, more proactive presence across Greater Darwin," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

"Our government is restoring community safety and backing our police with practical, on-the-ground support.

"In Parliament last night, we passed changes to strengthen Banned Drinker Orders, extending their duration from 7 days to 28 days. These reforms target alcohol-fuelled violence and provide frontline police with another tool to address problem public drinking," Mrs Finocchiaro said.

Security teams will work closely with Police, Larrakia Nation Night and Day Patrol, and local businesses to ensure earlier intervention to curb antisocial behaviour.

Mrs Finocchiaro also called on the City of Darwin to step up to its responsibilities.

"The City of Darwin used to co-fund CBD patrols, but under its current leadership it has walked away from even basic services, let alone contributing to community safety," she said.

"While Council fails to pick up garden waste or support safety initiatives, the CLP Government will continue to reduce crime to keep Territorians safe."
