Darwin Sister City Storytelling Contest Winners Named

City of Darwin has unveiled the Grand Prize winning entries of the 2025 Darwin Sister City Awards - Storytelling Competition at the Sister Cities Soirée, held as part of Darwin Festival on Saturday 16 August.

City of Darwin's Sister Cities Awards celebrates storytelling and its power to inspire, inform and connect the communities of Darwin and our Sister Cities across the globe.

In addition to the Awards, the Sister Cities Soirée featured themed trivia and vibrant cultural music and dance performances from talented community groups representing four of Darwin's seven Sister Cities: Haikou, Milikapiti, Denpasar, and Kalymnos.

City of Darwin CEO, Simone Saunders, thanked all entrants and congratulated the Grand Prize Winners.

"We are very impressed by the local and international talent engaged through the Darwin Sister City Awards - Storytelling Competition," Ms. Saunders said.

"The artistic expression and voices showcased demonstrated a strong sense of city pride and cross-cultural connection between Darwin and our Sister Cities," she said.

The Competition recognised Grand Prize Winners across four categories:

  • Photography: City Landscape - Shi Zhonghua (Haikou, China)

  • Photography: People - Ni Putu Bunga Kaniska Sanubari (Denpasar, Indonesia)

  • Poem - Tang Chenghan (Haikou, China)

  • Short Film - Putu Bagus Windhi Santika (Denpasar, Indonesia)

In addition to the four Grand Prize Winners, there were an additional 12 awards for Excellence and Special Encouragement.

City of Darwin's Sister City program aims to develop domestic and international relationships and to enhance cultural communication and economic exchange.

City of Darwin currently has seven Sister Cities: Ambon and Denpasar, Indonesia; Anchorage, USA; Dili, Timor Leste; Haikou, China; Kalymnos, Greece; and Milikapiti, Northern Territory.
