NT Government

Several significant Bills will be debated when Northern Territory Parliament resumes tomorrow, aimed at cutting red tape for business and improving outcomes for Territorians.

The Statute Law Amendment (Territory Economic Reconstruction) Bill 2022 will remove barriers to businesses by streamlining and improving processes.

It focusses on improving efficiencies in licensing and regulation, and creates greater flexibility for Territory businesses and removes red tape. This Bill contains more than 100 amendments to 25 different pieces of legislation.

Amendments to the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Amendment Bill 2022 will modernise the current law, and it introduces an anti-fraud measure to ensure only people born in the Territory or outside of Australia can register to change their name.

The Territory Labor Government will introduce the Public and Environmental Health Legislation Amendments Bill 2022, which will allow the Public Health Emergency declaration to cease, whilst retaining the ability to appropriately respond to COVID-19 and its variants, with adequate public health measures for up to two years.

This Bill will enact Directions to keep Territorians safe following the revocation of the Public Health Emergency declaration, and enable the CHO to retain capacity for decision making as we transition out.

This Sittings will also include a condolence motion for the former Member for Araluen, the Honourable Eric Houguet-Poole.

Quotes from Leader of Government Business Natasha Fyles:

"The Territory Labor Government's focus over this parliamentary sitting fortnight is to make business easier, improve services for Territorians and keep the community safe.

"This week we will build on the work we have done - supporting industry and positioning the Territory as a better place to live."
