Delivering world-class Somerville Sporting Precinct

Liberal Party Victoria

Local players at Somerville Sporting Precinct on Jones Road are set to win under a new commitment announced today by the Liberals and Nationals.

Somerville Sporting Precinct is home to 48 teams across the Somerville Cricket Club and Somerville Football Netball Club - as well as the Junior Football and Netball Clubs.

The current facilities at the precinct were largely built in the 1960's and 1980's by volunteers, using donated materials. They are now unsuitable for the clubs' capacities and are non-compliant with modern safety standards.

That's why a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will provide $3 million towards the redevelopment of the Somerville Sporting Precinct.

The funding towards the Somerville Sporting Precinct Upgrade is expected to provide:

  • Female and junior change facilities;
  • An expanded club room on a second level;
  • Kitchen and bar upgrades;
  • A first aid room;
  • Expanded toilet facilities;
  • Undercover viewing areas for spectators;
  • Expanded equipment storage space;
  • And an upgraded grandstand.

Shadow Minister for Sport, Cindy McLeish said it was important to continue to invest in grassroots projects.

"This investment by the Liberals and Nationals backs grassroots sport and provides local residents and families with a facility to be proud of."

Liberal Candidate for Hastings, Briony Hutton, said the upgrades would boost local participation in sport and recreational activities.

"I have had the pleasure of working with the Somerville Football Netball and Cricket Club members and supporters, and Somerville residents to proactively address their concerns and commit to sporting facility upgrades that these thriving clubs desperately need."

"I have listened to my community in Somerville, who have told me they expect a sporting facility at Jones Road that we can all be proud of. Only a Matt Guy Liberals and Nationals Government will deliver this long-overdue upgrade for The Nest at Somerville Sporting Precinct."
