The Australian Government has announced it will work with the Tasmanian Government to redevelop and transform Derwent Barracks at Dowsing Point in Hobart to help deliver new housing and support community growth.
The decision follows the independent Defence Estate Audit recommendation to divest sites no longer essential to support Defence's current and future operational needs. Divesting sites such as Derwent Barracks will allow Defence to reinvest in strategic capability and to better support its people.
Defence will carefully manage the transition from Derwent Barracks, with the relocation of personnel, capability and cadets expected to take at least 12 months. The Defence and Veterans Workshop is set to remain on site following initial consultation.
Defence personnel and cadets will be supported to move to suitable alternative locations once these are found and consultations are complete.
Estate Transformation Division First Assistant Secretary Peter West said consultation will continue throughout the process.
"Defence values your input and will carefully and deliberately work through workforce changes with you, particularly in relation to postings and families, as well as APS personnel who may be relocated if required," Mr West said.
Wellbeing support services are available for ADF and APS personnel, who are encouraged to seek help if needed.
