Governor Ron DeSantis has signed Senate Bill 892 into law, officially codifying the Florida State University College of Law's Election Law Center. The center, created during the 2023 legislative session through a $1 million appropriation, positions Florida State University as a national leader in election law scholarship and practice.
The FSU Election Law Center provides objective, evidence-based analysis of constitutional, statutory and regulatory issues in election law, working closely with election administrators, legislators and policymakers to improve election procedures and promote public confidence in the electoral system. The center also creates unique learning opportunities for FSU College of Law students, develops comprehensive election law resources and hosts conferences and training sessions.
"This legislation secures FSU's place at the forefront of election law scholarship and service," said Erin O'Hara O'Connor, dean of the FSU College of Law. "By codifying the Election Law Center, we are enhancing our ability to support election integrity and foster a deeper understanding of the democratic process."
Professor Michael T. Morley, Sheila M. McDevitt Professor of Law and Faculty Director of the Election Law Center, added, "Our mission is to promote election integrity, ensure robust voting opportunities, and strengthen public confidence in elections. I am grateful to Governor DeSantis, Senator Simon, Representative Albert and our legislative partners for their commitment to this important work. We look forward to working with the legislature, Secretary of State's office, and Supervisors of Elections, in addition to providing judicial training to help prepare our courts to deal with election emergencies."
FSU President Richard McCullough praised the legislation, stating, "The codification of the Election Law Center underscores FSU's dedication to academic excellence and public service. It provides our students unparalleled opportunities while contributing vital expertise to improve our democratic institutions."
Senator Corey Simon, sponsor of Senate Bill 892, remarked, "This legislation ensures Florida continues to lead the nation in secure, fair and accessible elections. The Election Law Center will be an invaluable resource for lawmakers, election officials and the public."
Representative Jon Albert, sponsor of the House companion bill, added, "I'm proud to have championed this effort. The center's evidence-based approach will help us craft sound election policy and uphold the integrity of our electoral system."
Senate Bill 892 builds on the strong foundation laid by the FSU Election Law Center since its inception and solidifies its role as a trusted, nonpartisan authority on election law in Florida and beyond.
