Director-General condemns murder of journalist Andrés Coronel Godoy in Paraguay

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has called for an investigation into the killing of radio journalist Humberto Andrés Coronel Godoy in the town of Pedro Juan Caballero in Paraguay's Department of Amambay on 6 September.
I condemn the murder of Andrés Coronel Godoy. I call on the authorities to investigate this killing and ensure that those responsible for it are brought to trial. Impunity must not be allowed to embolden the criminal use of violence to muzzle freedom of expression and press freedom.
Audrey Azoulay UNESCO Director-General

Mr Coronel Godoy was shot dead as he was leaving the premises of Radio Amambay where he worked. The journalist had been receiving threats since June this year.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
