Territorians can also get the vaccine at their local GP, Aboriginal health service, remote community clinic, community care centres, and participating pharmacies.
The diphtheria vaccine is routinely given to all babies, young children, adolescents and pregnant women in Australia, as part of the National Immunisation Program.
Territorians are recommended to have a booster vaccine if more than 10 years has passed since their last diphtheria vaccine.
Aboriginal Territorians and frontline workers in possible transmission areas are recommended to have a booster if more than 5 years has passed since their last diphtheria vaccine.
Parents should check their child's vaccination status with their health care provider to make sure they are up to date with the NT immunisation schedule.
Vaccination is free under the National Immunisation Program for people under 20 years of age. Children are routinely vaccinated against diphtheria at 6 weeks, 4 months, 6 months, 18 months, 4 years and 12 years. Pregnant women from 20 weeks of pregnancy are also eligible for a free vaccination.
The NT is also currently experiencing a surge in influenza associated with the winter flu season in southern states. If you have not already done so, it is recommended you get the 2026 flu vaccine from your GP, health clinic or participating pharmacies.
