Director-General urges investigation into killing of journalist Henry Vivanco in Ecuador

Audrey Azoulay, the Director-General of UNESCO, has condemned the killing of photojournalist César Henry Vivanco Castro who was found dead in his home in Huarquillas, southern Ecuador, on 13 November.
I condemn the killing of César Henry Vivanco Castro. I call on the authorities to investigate the circumstances and motives of Henry Vivanco's murder so as to establish if it was related to his work.

Henry Vivanco, a well-known photojournalist and writer, and a member of the national journalists' union, the Federación Nacional de Periodistas, had last been heard from two days prior to the discovery of his body, which showed signs of violence.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
