Director-General urges investigation into killing of journalist Pedro Pablo Kumul in Mexico

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, has condemned the killing of journalist Pedro Pablo Kumul in the town of El Castillo in the Mexican state of Veracruz on 21 November. He is the 19th journalist killed in Mexico this year, according to the UNESCO Observatory of Killed Journalists.
I condemn the killing of Pedro Pablo Kumul and urge the authorities to investigate this crime. Attacks on media workers concern society as a whole as they undermine press freedom, freedom of expression and freedom of information.

Kumul worked as a reporter for the newspaper AX Noticias and a broadcaster on Es Amor 105.5 HD radio.

UNESCO promotes the safety of journalists through global awareness-raising, capacity building and by coordinating the implementation of the UN Plan of Action on the Safety of Journalists and the Issue of Impunity.
