Doctoral studies go far beyond the production of scientific knowledge. In addition to producing highly specialized researchers, a doctoral degree contributes to developing professionals with critical thinking, leadership, creativity and the ability to adapt to complex and changing environments. This is the main message of a new publication by the League of European Research Universities ( LERU ), an alliance that gathers Europe's 24 leading research-intensive universities, including the University of Barcelona.
The document argues that a doctoral degree is one of the most strategic investments a society can make to prepare its future. In a context marked by technological transformations, geopolitical uncertainty and major social and environmental challenges, the skills acquired by doctoral candidates become especially valuable, both within and beyond universities.
Recommendations for enhancing the social impact of doctoral studies
The document identifies several conditions necessary for doctoral studies to fulfil their full potential, and makes four recommendations aimed at the main stakeholders involved.
Firstly, it urges universities to continue strengthening the quality of doctoral supervision, the development of transferable skills and the engagement of doctoral candidates with society.
Secondly, it calls on funding bodies to ensure stable and sustainable funding frameworks that protect academic freedom and facilitate diverse career paths, both within the university system and in other sectors.
Regarding policymakers, the document proposes recognizing doctoral studies as an essential public infrastructure for fostering innovation, strengthening democratic institutions and ensuring the long-term prosperity of societies.
