Rockhampton's annual play day, Romp in the Park, has brought together more than 50 local service providers and seen up to 3,000 attendees at this year's event.

Rockhampton Regional Council supported the event with a $2,000 grant through its Community Assistance Program, reinforcing its commitment to the wellbeing and development of children and families across the region.

Romp in the Park is a free event that's part of under 8s Week offering a range of playful, hands‑on activities designed to inspire learning through play.

Mayor Tony Williams said Council is proud to support this iconic Rockhampton event for another year.

"Everyone knows Romp in the Park. It's been part of Rockhampton families' annual events for decades.

"It really is something special and something which gives our kids and young ones a great day of fun and activities.

"My kids came along when they were young. Now my grandkids are doing the same.

"I'm really proud that Council is supporting this event again in 2026 and I'm looking forward to seeing everyone out and enjoy the day."

RockyStart Inc Secretary Joanne Young said the funding helped cover essential costs, ensuring Romp in the Park remained free and accessible.

"Romp in the Park plays a vital role in strengthening community connections and supporting families with young children," Ms Young said.

"It provides an opportunity for families to access local services, build relationships, and engage in positive early learning experiences together.

"Importantly, the funding allows us to enhance the quality and variety of experiences available on the day, ensuring children have access to engaging, high‑quality play opportunities.

"It also enables greater outreach and inclusion efforts, helping us connect with families who may benefit most from attending.

"Without this support, it would be significantly more challenging to deliver an event of this scale and impact for the Rockhampton community."

The Community Assistance Program supports non-profit community-based organisations with funding for grants and sponsorships towards projects and events that enhance the region's well-being.

Applications for the next round of Community Assistance Program grants open on Monday, 25 May and close Friday, 10 July.
