East Devonport Celebrates Rich History with Torquay Heritage Trail Opening

Devonport City Council Tasmania

The Torquay Heritage Trail, a four-kilometre journey through the vibrant history of East Devonport, will be officially opened at 11.30am on May 18, 2023. This trail serves as a testament to the community's strength and resilience, commemorating the past events that have shaped them.

The Devonport Soroptimist Club initially proposed the idea for the heritage trail, with the Rotary Club of Devonport South East leading the project. Funding and support were provided by Healthy Tasmania, Devonport City Council, and the Bass Strait Maritime Centre, showcasing the collaborative efforts of local organisations.

"The Tasmanian Liberal Government proudly supported the Torquay Heritage Trail through a $40,000 grant as part of our Healthy Tasmania Fund," said Jeremy Rockliff, Premier and Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing.

"The Fund is an important part of the Government's $10 million Healthy Tasmania Five-Year Strategic Plan 2022-2026 to bring together communities, services and all levels of government to work in partnership for improved health and wellbeing. These grants provide significant investment into local communities and promote physical activity, healthy lifestyles, positive mental health and community engagement."

The trail offers walkers a captivating journey through the original settlement of Torquay in 1855, highlighting the individuals who have called this area home throughout the years. The opening of the Torquay Heritage Trail holds great significance for the community, providing an opportunity for all to deepen their understanding of the region's remarkable history.

"The Torquay Heritage Trail is an exceptional addition to East Devonport's cultural and historical landscape. It not only showcases our community's history but also recognises the remarkable efforts of the Rotary and Soroptimist Clubs in bringing this project to life," Devonport Mayor Alison Jarman said.

"We hope the trail will inspire the community to explore our shared history and appreciate the unique character of East Devonport. The Torquay Heritage Trail is a valuable asset that we encourage everyone to experience," Cr. Jarman said.

The Rotary Club aims to provide walkers with a scenic and reflective experience, allowing them to appreciate the community's triumphs over adversity and draw inspiration from their heritage. Attendees are encouraged to engage with one another, fostering a sense of community pride and appreciation.
