As part of the North East Link Project, critical drainage works are currently underway for the future Manningham Road interchange. This means there will be significant traffic disruptions on the Eastern Freeway and Bulleen Road in April.
Bulleen Road closure - 9 to 20 April 2026
From 7:00pm Thursday 9 April to 6:00am Monday 20 April, southbound lanes on Bulleen Road, between Bridge Street and Manningham Road, will be closed day and night.
Detours will be in place, with delays of up to 15 minutes expected. Extensive consultation has been undertaken with local businesses to minimise impacts.
Thompsons Road night closures - 14 to 17 April 2026
Thompsons Road will be closed overnight, from Tuesday 14 April to Friday 17 April from 9:00pm to 5:00am each night, in both directions between Bulleen Road and the Ringwood-bound entry ramp.
These closures are required for critical works, including installation of new flyover lanes for future North East Link tunnel access.
Eastern Freeway closure between Bulleen Road and Tram Road - 17 to 20 April 2026
From 10:00pm Friday 17 April to 5:00am Monday 20 April, the Eastern Freeway will be closed in both directions between Bulleen Road and Tram Road.
What's expected
Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected during peak travel times. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and avoid the area where possible.
The closure will also impact the broader road network, with increased traffic expected on Doncaster Road, Tram Road, Manningham Road and Middleborough Road.
Electronic signs and detours will be in place to guide road users throughout the weekend.
During this closure, the following ramps will be closed to help ease traffic congestion:
- Chandler Highway Ringwood-bound entry ramp
- Middleborough Road citybound entry ramp
- Blackburn Road citybound entry ramp
- Springvale Road citybound entry ramp.
In addition, various right-turn movements and bus stops will be closed to help ease traffic congestion.
There will also be no parking or stopping along Doncaster Road in both directions between Burke Road and Cityview Road to ease traffic congestion.
North East Link Project will also close the walking and cycling bridge at Heyington Avenue, Doncaster from 10:00pm Friday 17 April to 5:00am Monday 20 April to complete minor finishing works.
