The Tasmanian Government's Expression of Interest (EOI) process will open this month to identify providers interested in developing and operating new aged care and assisted living facilities on government-owned greenfield sites in each region of the State.
The EOI delivers on the Government's 2025 election commitment to expand aged care and assisted living options for older Tasmanians, while supporting a stronger and more sustainable health system.
Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said as Tasmania's population continues to age, demand for aged care services is increasing.
"This initiative will help meet that demand by creating more opportunities for older Tasmanians to access appropriate care and support closer to home," Minister Archer said.
"The benefits extend beyond the aged care sector. Increasing the availability of aged care beds and assisted living places in areas of community demand will help improve the flow of patients through the health system by providing more suitable care options for people who no longer require hospital care.
"This will reduce pressure on hospital beds, emergency departments and inpatient wards, ensuring more timely access to care for Tasmanians who need hospital services.
"Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we're ensuring Tasmanians receive the right care, in the right place, at the right time.
"Our Government is taking action to build an even better Tasmania.
"We continue to call on the Federal Government to stop failing stranded patients in Tasmanian hospitals, an average of 100 Tasmanians on any given day, who are medically ready to be discharged into appropriate aged care and NDIS settings."
The Department of Health has worked collaboratively with other government agencies to identify 13 greenfield government-owned sites for inclusion in the EOI, providing a variety of potential investment opportunities for the aged care sector.
The EOI will be delivered through a two-stage process. Interested organisations will initially submit a high-level proposal outlining their capability, experience and development vision.
Shortlisted proponents will then be invited to provide a detailed business proposal for consideration.
The initiative is designed to attract investment from experienced aged care and assisted living providers, with proponents funding, developing and operating the facilities to deliver long-term community benefits, with one new facility in each region of the State.
The EOI will open on 26 September 2026 for a period of six weeks, closing on 6 November 2026.
