Epworth And Icon Unveil Game-changing Brain Treatment

Epworth

Epworth patients will soon have increased access to world-leading precision care, with Icon Cancer Centre set to open the first private hospital Gamma Knife facility in Victoria next year.

The new facility, which will be located at Epworth Richmond, represents a significant step in expanding access to one of the most advanced non-invasive brain treatment technologies available.

Gamma Knife technology uses hundreds of highly focused, sub-millimetre beams of radiation to precisely target and treat cancerous and non-cancerous brain tumours, vascular abnormalities and certain neurological disorders, all without the need for traditional surgery.

This technology is regarded as a medical game-changer for treating complex brain conditions, and may help reduce recovery times, improve treatment outcomes and enhance overall quality of life.

Skull Base Neurosurgeon and Director of Epworth Neurosciences Clinical Institute, Nick Hall, said the addition of the Gamma Knife builds on Epworth's long-standing partnership with Icon Cancer Centre as well as benefitting patients.

This new technology will give patients greater choice of advanced treatment options, all in one location.

"It strengthens Epworth Richmond's role as a hub for innovation, bringing the latest non-invasive therapies to the community we serve."

Icon Centre Radiation Oncologist Dr Neda Haghighi said the technology's precision is unmatched.

"The Gamma Knife enables us to treat highly complex brain conditions with exceptional accuracy," Dr Haghighi said.

"Using tiny beams of radiation, we can precisely target even the most difficult to treat brain tumours and other abnormalities while minimising side effects often associated with other treatment options."

Most patients only need between one and five treatment sessions, often commencing treatment on the same day as learning their treatment plan, reducing the number of hospital visits.

Icon Group CEO Mark Middleton OAM said the collaboration elevates Australia's oncology landscape.

"Together we're addressing one of the nation's growing healthcare concerns by expanding access to precision oncology and world-class care," he said.

Epworth and Icon have worked together for more than a decade to provide leading radiation oncology services.

This next step brings world-class technology closer to home, reinforcing Epworth's commitment to continually innovate and provide the latest technology for our patients' treatment.

The Gamma Knife centre at Epworth Richmond is scheduled to open in mid-2026.
