ESCWA & Partners Host 4th Arab Competition Forum in Riyadh

What: The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing the 4th Arab Competition Forum, in collaboration with the General Authority for Competition in Saudi Arabia (GAC), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), and other partners.

When: On Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 May 2023, starting 9:00 a.m. Riyadh time.

Where: Crowne Plaza Riyadh RDC Hotel and Convention, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and online via Zoom. Click here to register.

Who: The opening session will feature:

  • Mr. Ahmed Al-Kholifey, Chairman of the GAC Board of Directors;
  • Ms. Rola Dashti, UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary;
  • Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, UNCTAD Secretary-General;
  • Ms. Carmine Di Noia, OECD Director for Financial and Enterprise Affairs.

Participants will include high-level State representatives and delegates from ministries and competition authorities from member States, experts, academics, and other professionals in the private sector.

After the opening session, an award will be granted to the winners of the "Student Competition Challenge" launched in Saudi Arabia last March.

Why: The Forum will discuss mergers and acquisitions, and ways to improve the effectiveness of competition authorities in developing and least developed countries. It will also examine best practices for planning and conducting market studies, and will address concerns arising from abuse of dominance in digital markets.
