EV Charging Accuracy Consultation Concludes

Dept of Industry, Science and Resources

EVSE measure active electrical energy supplied to or from an electric vehicle. These need to be accurate so they don't misrepresent the calculated cost to customers.

NMI sought feedback in late 2025 on how maximum permissible errors (MPEs) should apply to EVSE installed or manufactured before 1 April 2026.

In response to industry feedback, NMI has decided that MPEs do not apply to EVSE manufactured before 1 April 2026. Accuracy requirements will continue to apply to new EVSE entering the market under the general certificate of approval (NMI 14/4/0).

This approach:

  • avoids retrospective regulation being applied to existing charging equipment
  • ensures accuracy requirements apply to new EVSE entering the market.

The consultation also informed a small number of clarifying amendments to the general certificate of approval, including updates to marking and sealing provisions.

What this means for industry

  • Only EVSE manufactured on or after 1 April 2026 must comply with the general certificate of approval.
  • There is currently no requirement for testing or verification until NMI develops a broader EVSE control framework in consultation with stakeholders.
