What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)?
Recognition of Prior Learning is the consideration of skills and knowledge you may have already gained through formal qualifications as well as informal and non-formal learning through the method of an RPL assessment. This can include work experience, prior formal studies, short courses and professional development.
We recognise the knowledge and experience your previous study and/or work has given you, and it may make you eligible for credit towards your course and a reduction in tuition costs.
How to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning?
Learning as the result of work or life experience, self-tuition, hobby or leisure activities (informal learning) or a structured course that does not lead to an officially accredited qualification (non-formal learning) may be credited against your degree with us in just the same way as formal qualifications are.

Any experience you're claiming must be relevant to the qualification you are applying for. For example, a knitting hobby probably won't be able to be credited against a business degree, but if you've been marketing and selling your creations as a sole trader, that might qualify.
Each application is assessed individually. Students explain how their experience matches learning outcomes to the of the subjects covered in your course. And then that submission is evaluated by academics who are leading professionals in their field.
To apply for Recognition of Prior Learning, you need to fill out the Application for Recognition of Prior Learning form and supply documents as evidence of your prior learning and/or experience.
Evidence for an RPL assessment can come in a wide range of forms, including:
- letters from employers/references (on business letterhead)
- curriculum vitae, and corroborating evidence
- work documents/job statement and evidence of process
- portfolios containing samples of work
- interviews
- presentations or practical demonstrations
- challenge exam
- performance review evidence
- non-award professional development courses, and other non-AQF awards and certificates
- recognition of merit or industry awards
