Explore Wonders Of Universe

If you are interested in the wonders of the Universe, you will not want to miss the opportunity to find out more about its origins, the history of the Milky Way, dark matter, gravitational waves and more, from University of Portsmouth space scientists.

On Wednesday 28 January, the University will be holding its annual Stargazing public event from 6pm until 8.30pm. For the first time, this will take place in the Portland building on the University's campus.

Budding astronomers of all ages can enjoy an evening packed with interactive exhibits, themed talks and activities such as night sky viewing through on-site telescopes (and via remote link to Clanfield Observatory) with the Hampshire Astronomical Group (weather permitting).

Stargazing 2026 , hosted by the University's Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation , will take place on campus in the University's Portland Building , with astronomers and cosmologists from the Institute teaming up with the Hampshire Astronomical Group , Airbus Defence and Space , Portsmouth Libraries , Space South Central , Plextek , the National Museum of the Royal Navy and others.

You'll be able to discover how researchers from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation are unlocking the mysteries of the Universe, right here in Portsmouth

Dr Nicolas Bonne , Public Engagement and Outreach Fellow at the University of Portsmouth

Dr Nic Bonne , Public Engagement and Outreach Fellow at the University of Portsmouth, said: "This will be our thirteenth Stargazing event which, over the years, has proved to be extremely popular. We hold them in January because it is such a good time for stargazing because of the long nights and potential for clear winter skies. Whether you have never really thought about the Universe before, are an amateur stargazer or a budding cosmologist, there is something for everyone.

"You'll be able to discover how researchers from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation are unlocking the mysteries of the Universe, right here in Portsmouth, as well as learn about how the space sector is booming locally. You'll also get a chance to view the night sky through telescopes with members of the Hampshire Astronomical Group, all being well weather-wise."

Talks on the programme for the Stargazing 2026 event include:

  • A History of the Universe in 60 million galaxies - Dr Sesh Nadathur , Associate Professor in Cosmology

  • Gravitational Waves: Where we are, and where we will be - Dr Charlie Hoy , Research Fellow

  • Cosmic Telescopes: Looking at the Universe through gravitational lenses - Dr Giovanni Granata , Research Fellow

  • Does dark matter fall like everything else? A test of gravity with galaxy surveys - Dr Natassia Grimm , Research Fellow
