Far North Police Continue To Drive Down Property Crime

Far North police supported by specialist units are seeing promising signs in reducing offending, as part of ongoing, targeted action to drive down property crime in the region.

Since 9 August, police have charged 215 offenders with 907 offences, including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, break and enter related charges, bail breaches and weapons offences.

Local police have conducted 325 bail checks and located eight weapons out of 1037 wandings.

On August 22, officers from the Cairns Property Crime Squad and Tactical Crime Squad located a man at a Manoora address.

It will be alleged he was involved with several stolen vehicles in the Cairns area in the last month.

The 19-year-old man was charged with three counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle, two of fail to appear, and one count of stealing.

He has been remanded in custody to re-appear before the Cairns Magistrates Court on 22 September.

On 24 August, a man was intercepted by officers as part of a wanding operation in the Cairns CBD.

It will be alleged the man had been involved with several break-ins of homes and businesses, as well as multiple involvements with stolen vehicles throughout the area over the past 18 months.

He has been charged with a total of 18 offences including seven counts of enter dwelling, three counts of enter premises, seven counts of unlawful use of motor vehicle, and one of fail to appear.

He has been denied bail and will appear before both the Cairns Childrens and Magistrates Court today, 26 August.

On 24 August, officers from the Tully and Innisfail Criminal Investigation Branches (CIB) executed a search warrant at a Utchee Creek property.

It will be alleged police located a quantity of cannabis and several firearms.

A 42-year-old Utchee Creek man was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and one count of possess dangerous drug.

He is due to appear in the Innsifail Magistrates Court on at a later date.

The Railway Squad and State Road Policing Command are in Cairns this week, conducting high-visibility patrols in hotspot areas.

Far North District Detective Inspector Jason Chetham said these concentrated intelligence activities will continue to keep the community safe.

"We've seen positive results over the last few weeks as our local officers and specialist units from the south-east conduct high-visibility and covert operations, to target offenders," Detective Inspector Chetham said.

"Our proactive activities including bail compliance checks, wandings and engaging with the community allow us to detect, prevent and deter offending in the Far North."
