Federal funding to fix nine black spots in Top End and improve road safety

Funding under the Liberal and Nationals Government's Black Spot Program will substantially improve nine dangerous crash sites on Northern Territory roads in 2021-22.

The Northern Territory will receive more than $1.7 million under the Black Spot Program's 2021-22 funding round, with councils contributing a further $1.4 million to the successful projects.

These nine new sites take the total number of projects funded across the Northern Territory to 58 since 2013-14, with almost $15 million in Commonwealth funding committed.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said one life lost on Australian roads is one too many.

"This major investment is part of the Liberal and Nationals Government's commitment to building safer roads right across the nation," the Deputy Prime Minister said.

"The Black Spot Program funds safety measures such as traffic signals and roundabouts at locations where a number of serious crashes are known to have occurred, or are at risk of occurring.

"This funding to improve dangerous sections of Northern Territory roads will help ensure more Territorians reach their destination safely and we have fewer fatalities on our roads."

Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport Scott Buchholz said the nine black spot projects across the Northern Territory would make an important contribution towards reducing serious injuries and deaths on Territory roads and builds on previous investments in the Territory.

"This Government continues to invest in road safety to ensure Australians get home sooner and safer, saving lives and livelihoods," Assistant Minister Buchholz said.

"This new funding will see the total investment through the Black Spot Program in the Northern Territory rise to $14.8 million, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to improving road safety across the Top End."

Senator for the Northern Territory and Chair of the Northern Territory Black Spot Consultative Panel Dr Sam McMahon said this investment in Black Spot projects would deliver safer roads in local government areas throughout the Territory.

"The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics has found that Black Spot projects reduce the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent on average," Dr McMahon said.

"The high-priority locations we are funding have seen a total of 36 crashes causing injuries recorded over the past five years.

"The panel that reviews priorities for the program includes representatives from the Northern Territory Road Transport Association, Northern Territory Police, Automobile Association of the Northern Territory and Territory and local governments."

The Liberal and Nationals Government has committed $1.1 billion to the Black Spot Program from 2013-14 to 2023-24 to improve road safety nationwide. More than 3,000 projects have been funded under the program since 2013.
