For many new parents, breastfeeding can be both rewarding and challenging.
Whether it's helping establish breastfeeding in the early days or providing reassurance when things don't go to plan, lactation consultants play an important role in supporting families during this journey.
As part of World Breastfeeding Week, we spoke to Royal Darwin Hospital lactation consultants Rebecca and Donna about one of the most common breastfeeding challenges they see – mastitis.
'Mastitis is often misunderstood,' they explain. 'Many people still receive advice that is no longer recommended.'
Current evidence shows that mastitis is primarily an inflammatory condition, meaning treatment focuses on reducing inflammation while continuing to breastfeed.
Rebecca and Donna recommend
- Continue breastfeeding as normal (avoid pumping where possible).
- Use gentle lymphatic massage before feeds, using light strokes from the nipple towards the chest wall.
- Apply ice after feeds.
- Avoid handling the breast between feeds.
- Rest and stay hydrated.
- Use anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen, unless you have been advised not to by a health professional.
'If your symptoms aren't improving within 24 hours or you develop a fever or chills, it's important to see your GP, health clinic or attend your nearest emergency department,' they said.
For Rebecca and Donna, supporting families goes beyond providing clinical advice. It's about helping parents feel informed, reassured and confident during one of life's biggest transitions.
This World Breastfeeding Week, we thank all our lactation consultants for the expertise, compassion and care they provide to Territory families every day.
