First uniform description of climate scenarios in German-speaking world

IIASA

Thomas Schinko, Equity and Justice (EQU) Research Group Leader, participated in the working group that prepared recommendations for a uniform German-language description of the climate scenarios of The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

On 4 April 2022, The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) presented the results of the new Assessment Report of Working Group III on Climate Change (AR6), which focuses on "climate action." Climate scenarios are an important basis for the development of targeted climate protection measures, as well as in climate research in general.

In the German-speaking world, there has been no uniform language regulation so far, as a result of which different names have been used for the same climate scenarios in recent years. This often led to irritation and confusion. To counteract this, at the beginning of 2022, a working group of the meteorological services of Germany, Austria and Switzerland as well as various federal, state and climate research institutions presented for the first time recommendations for uniform naming, description and colour coding of a selection of climate scenarios of the IPCC.
