Five Million-Dollar Increase in Security Across Our Hospitals

Across Our Hospitals

The Marshall Liberal Government invested more than $5 million extra in security services, predominantly in additional security guards, throughout SA Health sites in the past financial year.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Stephen Wade said the additional security services have provided better safeguards for staff across the health system.

"The personal security of our staff, patients and visitors to our hospitals is of utmost importance," Minister Wade said.

"We listen and take concerns seriously. We have spent almost $40 million on security services across the health system in 2018-19, up from $34.2 million in 2017-18.

The additional spend on security services comes as SA Health staff identify security services as one of the key elements to a safe and secure car parking environment around metropolitan hospitals.

Minister Wade said the car parking survey results offer a valuable insight into the views of staff and the public regarding the safety of public hospitals and car parking facilities.

"More than 2,500 people submitted their feedback into our recent car parking survey, 89 per cent who were SA Health staff.

"Overwhelmingly, the availability of car parking and associated security was highlighted as the main concern by both staff and those members of the public who responded.

"We know access to car parking is imperative for both staff and our patients, and that's why earlier this year we announced an extra 205 car parks are to be created at the Lyell McEwin Hospital.

Minister Wade said the Central Adelaide Local Health Network had also recently improved management of its car parking which improve access and capacity the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

"Lighting upgrades are already underway at a number of hospitals, and we are looking to add additional capacity where possible.

"Our number one priority is to provide a safe environment for our staff, patients and their families when they are attending our sites or in our care."

The Auditor-General's report notes that spending on security services across SA Health rose by more than $5 million last year, from $34.2 million in 2017/18 to $39.6 million in 2018/19.

The expenditure largely relates to the provision of security guards across multiple Local Health Networks.

Major State Government car parking improvements include:

· About $50 million for the construction of a new multi-level car park at Flinders Medical Centre (FMC)

· $20 million for the construction of a new multi-level car park at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) with about 200 extra car park spaces (completion is expected in the coming months)

· $7 million expansion to a multi-level car park at LMH, announced in July 2019
