A new mural celebrating Black women has been unveiled on the University's campus during Black History month.
Flora: A Tribute to Sisterhood and Black Women was commissioned by the University and designed by Unify - the creative studio behind iconic Welsh murals such as the Butetown Mona Lisa and My City, My Shirt.
The 14-metre-high mural can be found on the Sports Centre building, Senghenydd Road, and is a testament to the enduring power of sisterhood and a celebration of the invaluable role Black women play as the bedrock of our community—mothers, daughters, sisters at the heartbeat of our society.
Cardiff University's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Larner, said: "This striking mural tells a powerful story of Black women, diversity and community - and we're delighted with it. We wanted to commission a piece of public art that reflects the multicultural city that we call home, and Unify have created something that has exceeded our expectations."
Yusuf Ismail of Unify said: "We wanted to create a mural that pays homage to the vital roles Black women play in our lives and society every day.
"The mural portrays a Black woman surrounded by foliage, symbolising the elevated position of Black woman in our communities and their importance.
"Each flower represents the unique and diverse stories of Black women in our community and we wanted to communicate through this piece."
The mural was unveiled by Professor Larner at an event on 25th October 2023.
