A food company has been handed a significant penalty after pleading guilty to multiple breaches of the Food Act 2008 (WA), reinforcing the importance of maintaining high hygiene standards when operating a food business.
The matter was heard at the Midland Magistrates Court in October, where the company pleaded guilty to six charges relating to the cleanliness of its premises.
The Court imposed a fine of $25,000 and ordered the company to pay $2,308.35 in legal costs.
The Court acknowledged that the company had since implemented improved cleaning protocols, including daily photographic evidence of cleaning and increased oversight by company directors.
However, it made clear that such measures, while welcome, did not excuse previous failures.
The Court rejected a claim that being 'busy and short-staffed' could justify unsanitary conditions, stating that food businesses must maintain excellent cleanliness standards due to the serious public health risks involved.
The case serves as a strong reminder to food business operators of the importance of maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Businesses that fail to comply with food safety laws not only put public health at risk but also face serious financial and reputational consequences.
