Football's Ultimate Rivalry Returns To MCG

VIC Premier

One of the biggest rivalries in world football will play out at the MCG when Brazil takes on Argentina, after the match was secured with support from the Andrews Labor Government.

Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula today announced the Superclásico 2022 will see the return of the two powerhouse South American teams to Melbourne on Saturday, 11 June.

The previous time these two teams played in Melbourne in 2017, more than 95,000 fans packed the MCG.

The event is expected to deliver a multimillion-dollar boost to the Victorian economy and attract thousands of interstate and international visitors to Melbourne.

The important lead-up game to the FIFA World Cup will generate significant interest from fans, broadcasters and media around the world.

The original format of the competition, the Superclásico de las Americas, was established in 2011 and is the continuation of the rivalry between Brazil and Argentina that stems back more than a century.

In 2019, an independent study found that the value of major events to the Victorian economy was $2.5 billion. The report also showed that major events attracted almost 6.9 million international and interstate visitors to Victoria.

Tickets will be available to the general public from 2pm, Thursday, 21 April via ticketek.com.au.

As stated by Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula

"To have two of the most successful football teams in the world return to the MCG to continue their longstanding rivalry reinforces our position as one of the world's great sporting cities and Australia's event capital."

"Football is known as the world game and a match of this calibre will put millions of eyes on Melbourne and attract thousands of visitors to Victoria."

"Securing the Superclásico 2022 comes after a record-breaking Australian Grand Prix, the Rip Curl Pro, Australian Open and a jam-packed theatre calendar that includes Harry Potter and the Cursed Child and Moulin Rouge! The Musical."

As stated by Pitch International Director of Football Anthony Bloch

"Following the success of the Brazil vs Argentina Match in 2017, we always planned to bring the Superclasico back to Melbourne."

"We are excited to work again with our local partners in the staging of this amazing event, in collaboration with our long-term partners Confederação Brasileira de Futebol and Torneos y Competencias S.A., the exclusive agency of Asociación del Fútbol Argentino."
