Forging Stronger ASEAN-China Partnership for Shared Future

In an era marked by burgeoning possibilities and aspirations, the University of Hong Kong (HKU) recently served as the locus for a convergence of distinguished minds, intent on fostering a renewed spirit of partnership with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). Intellectual luminaries, hailing from across the region, had convened for a thoughtful and inspiring seminar on September 14, titled "Shared Future: Toward a Closer ASEAN-China Community," facilitated by the Research Hub on Institutions of China (RHIC).

The stage was set for a day of profound reflection and spirited discussion, punctuated by the compelling insights of H.E. Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, Secretary-General of ASEAN. In his keynote address, he drew upon the rich tapestry of wisdom that has defined his life's work. Dr. Kao spoke with passion and eloquence of the principles that must underpin the ASEAN-China partnership: unity and collaboration. It was a message that resonated deeply with the audience.

Dr. Kao underscored the significance of sustainable economic development, emphasizing that China has maintained its position as ASEAN's largest trading partner for an impressive 14 consecutive years. Furthermore, he stressed the necessity of collaborative efforts in battling climate change and environmental degradation. By referencing recent natural disasters and pressing environmental concerns, Dr. Kao illustrated the urgency for countries to unite in addressing these formidable challenges.

As the seminar unfolded, the speakers delved into the complexities of this intricate dance between nations. Professor Xiang Zhang, President of HKU, gave voice to the pivotal role played by the ASEAN community in a rapidly evolving world. "Young talent and continually growing, the ASEAN community is one of the leading engines for global economic growth for the decades to come," Professor Zhang observed. "The diversity of culture, language, and history across its members is complemented by shared values and commitments to comprehensive economic development. The Sino-ASEAN relationship is mutually beneficial."

Prior to the seminar, Professor Zhang and Dr. Kao had met to discuss the potential avenues for fostering a brighter "shared future". HKU has set its sights on the creation of scholarships and other educational opportunities for students and researchers from the region. Through these programs, it hopes to foster a greater exchange of ideas and cultivate the foundations of the ASEAN-China community. It is believed that through collaborations in education, research, and policy, the ASEAN-China community will continue to grow and flourish, contributing to a better world for future generations.
