Free breakfast and bike checks for Ride2Work Day

Ditch the car and ride your bike to start your day in a healthier way on National Ride2Work Day next Wednesday 18 October.

Cairns Regional Council is hosting a free barbecue breakfast near the Esplanade Lagoon from 6.30am to 8.30am for riders looking to pedal their way to work.

Whether you're a regular bike commuter or have been toying with the idea for a while, Ride2Work Day is the ideal opportunity to embrace active travel and get moving on your way to and from the workplace.

Riders can enjoy a free barbecue breakfast and have their bikes checked.

Division 8 Councillor Rhonda Coghlan said Cairns had a vibrant recreational cycling community.

"Cairns has more than 600 kilometres of dedicated bike and footpaths for pedestrians and cyclists," she said.

"Pop on your helmet, hop on your bike, and be part of this fantastic initiative.

"By choosing to ride to work on this day, you not only prioritize your health but also contribute to reducing traffic congestion in our beautiful city.

"Council is also progressing projects such as the Northern Beaches Leisure Trail, which will ultimately connect Cairns CBD to Palm Cove via shared pathway walking and cycling links.

"Our focus is to design Cairns for liveability through providing opportunity for sustainable travel and active lifestyles."

This initiative is part of the Active Lifestyles & Cycling for All Program which is funded by the Queensland Government and supported by Cairns Regional Council.

In May this year, Council installed cycle counters at Barr Creek Bridge, which connects Machans Beach to Holloways Beach, and the Cairns Northern Cycleway in Freshwater.

Using sensor technology, the counters collect insights into travel behaviour and patterns which can be used to attract further investment in recreational infrastructure.

So far more than 18,500 movements have been recorded at the Barr Creek Bridge, peaking at 385 in one day, while more than 27,300 have been recorded in Freshwater, peaking at 875 in one day.
