Free household chemicals cleanout for Macleay residents

Residents with unwanted chemicals or hazardous waste can dispose of the items for free at a collection day at Kempsey on Sunday, 28 April 2019.

Kempsey Shire Council, MIDWASTE and the NSW EPA are providing the free, safe and easy disposal service for any unwanted or out-of-date household chemicals.

The collection point is outside the Kempsey Waste Management Centre at 683 Crescent Head Road, Kempsey from 9:00am to 4:00pm.

This service is for domestic quantities of household hazardous chemicals only, with the first 20kg/litres able to be disposed of free of charge.

Eligible household chemicals include items such as pool chemicals, pesticides, garden chemicals (weed killers), solvents (paint stripper), household cleaners and chemicals (bleach and detergents) and pharmaceuticals.

Council's Coordinator Waste Services, Gavin Hughes, encouraged Kempsey Shire residents to use the free disposal service to clear out any unwanted chemicals stored at home.

"This is a great free service for our local community to jump on as household chemicals shouldn't be endlessly stored or inappropriately disposed of," he said.

"We remind people to take particular care to ensure all chemicals are well secured in their containers to be transported safely to the collection point."

Household quantities of these items and other household problem wastes (gas bottles, fire extinguishers, car and household batteries, paint and oils, fluorescent lights, smoke detectors) can all be accepted free at Council's Community Recycling Centre (CRC) at the waste facility.

The chemical cleanout project is a NSW EPA Waste Less, Recycle More initiative funded from the NSW Government's waste levy.
