Darwin residents are invited to add some greenery to their gardens, with more than 2,000 free native plants available at City of Darwin's next Native Plant Giveaway.
The giveaway will be held on Saturday 17 October 2026 from 8:00 am to 11:00 am at The Esplanade (Lyons Ward), with a range of native trees, shrubs and grasses available.
Lord Mayor Peter Styles said the popular giveaways provided residents with an opportunity to add native plants to their gardens for free.
"Our Native Plant Giveaways are always well supported, and it's fantastic to see so many residents keen to add native plants to their gardens," Mr Styles said.
"With more than 2,000 plants available, there's a great opportunity for households to pick up a mix of trees, shrubs and grasses that will suit their outdoor spaces.
"It's a simple initiative, but when those plants are established in gardens across Darwin, collectively they make a real contribution to the greening of our city," he said.
Native plants are suited to Darwin's tropical conditions and require less water and maintenance than many introduced species once established, while also providing important habitat for local birds, frogs, lizards and other wildlife.
Each Darwin household can collect up to six free plants, with proof of Darwin residency required.
Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as plants are available while stocks last and previous giveaways have proven popular.
City of Darwin's Native Plant Giveaway program supports the Greening Darwin Strategy 2030, which aims to increase urban greening, improve biodiversity and create a cooler and more liveable city.
