Free tax clinic to support Territorians at tax time

Charles Darwin University is lending a helping hand for eligible Territorians that need support with their tax return with free advice and support.

The CDU tax clinic, supported by the Australian Taxation Office, provides a place where Territorians, who do not have their own professional advice, can receive assistance from tax students, supervised by academic staff and experienced tax practitioners.

The CDU Tax Clinic has been established to provide free and accessible services to members of the community in the Northern Territory and is available to eligible individuals, small businesses, not-for-profit organisations, and charities who may not be able to afford professional tax advice and services.

CDU Lecturer in Business - Accounting Raul David said the free clinics would start in July at several locations across the Northern Territory including Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs.

"We know that for many Territorians tax time is a daunting time and many people simply can't afford to hire the professional services of an accountant to manage their tax affairs," Mr David said.

"Our accounting students will have the opportunity to gain practical hands-on experience of dealing with clients in a real-life setting, which ensures they are job-ready at the completion of their qualifications."

The clinic will run from June 28 to 31 October on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10am to 6pm at level 3, room 3.05 at the CDU waterfront campus in Darwin.

The campus will then travel to Alice Springs at Yeperenye Shopping Centre from August 15 to 18 and October 10 to 13 from 9am to 5pm.

It will be available for Katherine residents from September 9-15 at Oasis Shopping Centre in Katherine from 9am to 5pm.

Online bookings and phone appointments are essential but client walk-ins are also accepted.
