Free Workshop Builds Disaster Resilience For Small Businesses

Mayor Tom Tate speaking at disaster resilience breakfast

Gold Coast small businesses have gained practical skills to safeguard their operations against disasters, at a free City-led resilience breakfast this morning.

Mayor Tom Tate said more than 80 business leaders from retail, hospitality, tourism, services and trade sectors attended the three-hour workshop, focused on disaster preparedness and recovery.

"Our city is no stranger to severe weather after experiencing the 2023 Christmas Day and New Year's Eve storms, and Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year," said Mayor Tom Tate.

"Today's forum equipped local businesses with practical tools and expert advice to strengthen resilience and bounce back faster."

Attendees participated in two real life disaster scenarios and heard from key service providers including financial counsellors, wellness coaches and government agencies.

The workshop also addressed risks beyond natural disasters, such as IT threats, workplace emergencies and reputational incidents.

Participants learnt how to:

  • prepare, respond and recover from disasters
  • communicate effectively during a crisis or disaster
  • access financial advice and resources
  • apply for disaster grants and manage insurance claims
  • build resilience into business processes and practices.

The Gold Coast Small Business Disaster Resilience Breakfast is funded under the Business Resilience Partnership Program, and jointly supported by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Commonwealth State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

Locals are encouraged to sign up for Gold Coast Alerts to ensure they remain up to date with the latest information in a disaster. Visit the Disaster and Emergency Dashboard.
