Freshwater Tennis Club Park gets new name

The Tennis Club Park at Freshwater will be renamed to Richmond Park in homage to the area's past.

Investigations for a new name started about one year ago when Council was undergoing a consultation process for a new playground at the Freshwater Tennis Club Park.

It was discovered the Freshwater Railway Station was originally called Richmond Siding and later Richmond Park Railway Station.

The tennis club was also part of the original Richmond Park Estate, which covered the park and surrounding area in the late 1800s.

Following consultation with residents, and with consideration that there are no other parks in Cairns with this name, and that there is little signage paying homage to the original name of the area, Council has endorsed the park being renamed to Richmond Park.
