From 16 Days of Activism to 365 Days of Action

Every year, the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign inspires people around the world to learn, reflect, and take action to end violence against women.

The City of Stonnington highlighted the importance of this campaign with a series of activities, talks and promotions to reinforce the Respect Is message, and to encourage the community to listen and learn about gender equality and how it can be achieved.

As we've come to the end of the campaign, it's timely to consider what we can do beyond the 16 Days to progress gender equality.

Gender equality and working towards a future where women and gender diverse people enjoy the same rights, and have the same opportunities as everyone else, is everyone's business.

Here are a few things we can all do each day to promote gender equality in our homes, workplace and everywhere else.

  • Share the workload at home
  • If you have children, parent equally with your partner
  • Encourage your children to play with toys of their choice rather than gender specific toys
  • Be aware of gender stereotypes
  • Learn to be an active bystander and safely call out everyday sexism, sexual harassment and disrespect
  • Value women's voices and opinions, ask them what they think
  • Learn how to support someone experiencing family violence
  • Provide information about support services available
  • Be a gender equality ally by publicly supporting, and actively working to achieve it
  • Engage men and boys to be part of ending violence against women and initiatives to address gender inequality
