A new project in Wallsend, Newcastle, will upgrade Ironbark Creek. The work will help reduce flood risk and improve the local environment.
The project will:
- transform a section of the concrete stormwater channel into a natural living stream
- reintroduce naturalised waterway features to support aquatic health and water quality
- create habitat for native plants and animals
- moderate stormwater flows during heavy rain
- strengthen resilience during severe weather.
The upgrade is part of a $62 million project. Delivered by Hunter Water, the project will reduce flood risk and naturalise waterways. It will use nature-based solutions to improve the health of Ironbark Creek.
These areas will:
- improve water quality
- support native plants
- provide better habitat for species such as turtles, fish and birds.
The Australian Government is providing $10 million in funding through the Local Environmental Projects Program. The program supports communities to restore and protect local environments.
Hunter Water is delivering the project with support from the New South Wales Government and the City of Newcastle.
