Funding supports Devonport Judo Club’s new ‘Dojo’

Devonport City Council Tasmania

The Devonport Judo Club now has state-of-the-art training facilities thanks to funding assistance from the Devonport City Council.

Through Council’s Major and Minor Financial Assistance Grants Scheme, the Club underwent a major refurbishment to transform its Forbes Street premises into a modern “Dojo”, suitable for the diverse needs of the Devonport judo community.

Devonport Mayor Annette Rockliff said the refurbishment was made possible thanks to $15,000 through Council’s 2020-2021funding scheme, plus club members contributing 439 voluntary hours and $5,500.

Cr Rockliff said this is a great example of a dedicated sporting club coming together and working hard to improve a facility, not only for their own benefit, but for the region.

“On assessing the grant application, the Financial Assistance Working Group was impressed at the quality of the application. It was well thought out, with the project broken down, and all tasks clearly listed with their financial value attributed,” Cr Rockliff said.

“The club has a clear priority in creating a positive sense of community, not only within their club, but the greater Devonport community.

“The improved facilities will assist the club in furthering the health and wellbeing opportunities on offer in our region.”

Devonport Judo Club Member Alison Priestley said the project included new flooring, improved storage, new administration counter, internal painting, new hot water cylinder, replaced lighting to energy efficient options, refurbished bathroom and changerooms.

Ms Priestly said the club is thankful for the grant, which supported their move into Council’s old Gymnastics Centre.

“We are very excited to have moved into a state-of-the-art judo training facility, which will now draw state, national and international judo coaches and players,” Ms Priestley said.

“With the upgraded facilities, we can train our members and state judo players to the highest levels in judo, which will also help in boosting our membership numbers to an all-time high.”

The Devonport City Council’s Major and Minor Financial Assistance Grant is now open for applications until 31 August 2021.
