GDP Increases 0.2 Percent In June 2026 Quarter

New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP) rose 0.2 percent in the June 2026 quarter, following a 0.9 percent increase in the March 2026 quarter, according to figures released by Stats NZ today.

"The 0.2 percent growth in economic activity in the June 2026 quarter reflects mixed results, with increases in nine out of 16 industries," general manager and macroeconomic spokesperson Jason Attewell said.

Construction up 2.7 percent in the quarter

Construction was the largest upward contributor to the overall increase in GDP, up 2.7 percent in the quarter. This was the largest increase in construction activity since the June 2023 quarter.

"An increase in residential building activity contributed to the overall growth in the construction industry in the June 2026 quarter," Attewell said.

Public administration and safety also contributed to the increase in GDP in the June 2026 quarter, up 2.0 percent.

The largest downward contributors to GDP in the June 2026 quarter were transport, postal, and warehousing (down 1.7 percent), and retail trade and accommodation (down 1.0 percent).

GDP per capita rose 0.1 percent during the June 2026 quarter.

Expenditure GDP up 0.4 percent

The expenditure measure of GDP rose 0.4 percent in the June 2026 quarter, following a 1.1 percent increase in the March 2026 quarter.

Export volumes rose 3.3 percent in the June 2026 quarter. This was driven primarily by an increase in goods exports, including meat products (up 10.3 percent); other food, beverages, and tobacco (up 7.2 percent); and dairy products (up 3.3 percent).

"US demand for New Zealand beef contributed to the increase in meat exports in the June 2026 quarter," Attewell said.

Import volumes fell 0.8 percent in the quarter. Services imports fell 3.7 percent, driven by declines in travel services (down 6.4 percent), and transport services (down 7.5 percent).

Gross fixed capital formation (sometimes referred to as investments in fixed assets) rose 1.5 percent in the June 2026 quarter, led by increased spending on residential building work (up 4.4 percent). This was reflected in the rise in construction activity over the period.
