Georges River Council Rings in Spring with Grow It Local

Georges River Council

Georges River Council is encouraging residents to celebrate spring by growing their own produce and registering their patch for free in a new partnership with Grow It Local.

Grow It Local is a community initiative focused on building local food systems, building healthier and more connected communities, and reducing food waste to landfill.

By registering to growitlocal.com for free, Georges River Council residents can learn how to grow their own produce in their backyard, balcony, community garden or windowsill. The free membership includes a forum to swap, sell or purchase grown food with other residents, and be part of an online community.

Residents who sign up for free will also have access to digital workshops to learn how to garden. Upcoming online sessions include how to grow your own vegetables from seeds, how to make this harvest your best yet and how to save seeds for next season.

Grow It Local ambassador and ABC Gardening Australia TV presenter, Costa Georgiadis, said Grow It Local is providing an opportunity for people to become a member or register their patch at growitlocal.com.

"Learn, connect and share with a community of like-minded growers," he said.

"The more people we have on the map locally at growitlocal.com, the more it gives us all a chance to engage and be part of the communities in which we live, the key is its local."

Mayor Nick Katris met with Costa recently to mark the new partnership and said, "Grow It Local is a wonderful program that offers residents free gardening education but also offers the chance to be part of a local gardening community, growing and swapping or purchasing their produce.

"I know how passionate our community is about the environment and this program assists residents who want to be proactive about their food waste; I encourage all residents to join and get growing this spring."
