Gold Coasters should consider severe weather events as regular occurrences not a rare possibility and take immediate steps to protect their family, pets and property Mayor Tom Tate said today.

"We have experienced multiple severe weather events just this year and according to the Bureau of Meteorology, we can expect more. It is time to take action now."

Launching the annual Get Ready campaign in Surfers Paradise this morning Mayor Tate said he understood there had been a lot of commentary about the weather and people may feel overwhelmed.

"So let's simplify it into three easy steps – understand your risk, make a plan and pack an emergency kit."

"Understanding your risk is simply knowing whether your home or access to it might be impacted in a severe event.

"Then consider what you would do in an event. Talk with your family and make your plan."

He said to consider the difference in your response if it happened at 1am while you are at home in bed or 1pm on a school and work day.

Mayor Tate said the third step was creating an emergency kit.

"This is also simple and personal. What do you need? I would suggest things like a torch, your medication, key documents, water, some basic food and a phone charger. But you need to tailor it for you."

Mayor Tate also reminded residents you could do a few simple things to prepare your home also including cleaning your gutters and yard of debris.

"Now is the perfect time to jump on the city's new green organics bin promotion – order one now and get a free recycle bin upgrade free of cost."

Mayor Tate said hints and tips on preparing for the wet season can be found at cityofgoldcoast.com.au/getready.
