Get yourself a purrfect friend this winter

Forget your winter coat, head down to Townsville City Council's Animal Care and Adoption Centre and adopt a furry friend this winter instead.

Council is offering a 50% discount on animals available for adoption over the next two weeks.

Community Health and Environment Committee Chair Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said she would love to see the pets go to their fur-ever homes this winter.

"There are some beautiful pets looking for a new home at our adoption centre and I would love to see them go home with their new families," Cr Greaney said.

"Our winter specials will run for two weeks; this gives interested residents the chance to meet the animals and decide if they're a fit for their family.

"Owning a pet is a lifelong commitment and Council is really pushing for responsible pet ownership which is why any adopted animals will be de-sexed, microchipped and registered at the time of adoption."

Interested residents are encouraged to bring their current pets along to the Adoption Centre for a meet and greet with the other animals.

Cr Greaney also asked residents looking to adopt have made their homes and yards pet friendly.

"Council wants to make sure these pets stay home once they leave the Adoption Centre, so we do ask renters to have permission from their landlords and that yards have been pet-proofed," Cr Greaney said.

The discounted adoptions began today and will run to 10 August. Prices range from $46 through to $179.

Other animal management initiatives also include:

  • Free registration of a first dog for Pensioners
  • Free approval for up to two microchipped and desexed cats for Pensioners
  • Monthly free microchipping days
