GIS Boosts Population, Housing Census Integration

To further strengthen its support to member States in conducting population and housing censuses, ESCWA, in collaboration with the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC) and the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), organized a webinar on 30 April titled "Integrating Geographic Information Systems (GIS) into Population and Housing Censuses: Latest Trends".

The webinar brought together representatives from national statistical offices and other relevant institutions across the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member countries to discuss recent developments in integrating geospatial information into population and housing censuses.

Discussions covered the latest international standards, emerging methodological developments, and selected country practices related to integrating GIS and geospatial information into population and housing censuses. They focused particularly on digital mapping, geocoding, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-enabled field operations, the use of earth observation data, geospatial quality assurance, and the dissemination of geospatially enabled census outputs.
