Gordonvale's Kenrick Park Redevelopment Begins Civil Works

The transformation of Kenrick Park in Gordonvale is underway, starting the process of recreating a dynamic community space for families in the southern corridor of Cairns.

Civil works mark the start of the $6 million stage one of the project, which will include a new dog off leash area, playground equipment, intermediate pump track, carpark, toilets, pathways, basketball court, shelters, and picnic areas.

Construction of stage one is expected to be completed by late 2024.

The Queensland Government announced a $3 million funding commitment to the project earlier this year.

Kenrick Park covers 5.7 hectares in Gordonvale, which has been identified as a key population growth area in the southern part of the Cairns Regional Council area.

Division 1 Councillor Brett Moller said the community would welcome the sight of work starting at the park following extensive public consultation, master planning and the completion of detailed design.

"This project will have benefits for decades to come and will become a destination park for all of Cairns, not just locals but also visitors to our region," Cr Moller said.

"It will create a safe, sustainable, and connected place for the southern corridor that complements residents' quality of life.

"With the population of the southern corridor expected to increase by 40,000 people by 2050, redevelopment of this park will allow for that growth and provide important social, recreational and play spaces for residents.

"It will increase liveability, provide a space to promote positive physical and mental health, and also help address crime and anti-social behaviours in the area."

The Kenrick Street Park Masterplan also outlines a variety of proposed additions to be constructed in stages in future years.

Cr Moller said another important aspect of the redevelopment was a cycle and pedestrian path that would link the park to the Bruce Highway overpass, improving access, safety and connectivity into the Gordonvale town centre.

"The $3 million funding commitment from the Queensland Government has helped make this project happen and we thank Curtis Pitt and fellow local members Michael Healy and Craig Crawford for their support in securing this commitment."

Speaker of the Queensland Parliament and Member for Mulgrave Curtis Pitt said the masterplan is vital to planning for the future of the community.

"Gordonvale is a fast-growing area, and the Kenrick Park Masterplan is a vital component to cater for that growth," Mr Pitt said.

"At present, the park is underdeveloped with a basic skate park, dirt BMX track and ageing basketball court and really doesn't meet Gordonvale's needs now or into the future as the community grows.

"While it is important to have the roads and water infrastructure in place to enable growth, it is facilities such as Kenrick Park that encourages growth and improves liveability for local families.

"Through Stage 1 of the Masterplan, the new playground, toilet facilities, car park, seats and barbecues, cycle and walking paths, will make an enormous and immediate impact for locals and visitors to the area."
